Your West Cobb child care guide to your infant’s language milestones

Posted on 10-14-2014

Although your infant won’t say his or her first word for a long time, he or she will start developing language skills right from birth. This growth is driven by different sensory input. By hearing the people in his or her environment talk and listening to stories read by family members and teachers, your infant will learn to produce pre-verbal sounds like cooing and babbling. Here is a helpful guide to these milestones in your child’s first year:

0 – 3 Months

  • Smiling when seeing you or another familiar face
  • Being surprised by unexpected sudden or loud sounds
  • Increased response to mother’s voice
  • Develops different cries for hunger, tiredness etc

3 – 6 Months

  • Responds to communication by babbling towards the speaker
  • Can express positive and negative responses through sound
  • Follows sounds with eyes
  • Enjoys toys that make sounds/music

6-12 Months

  • Imitates words with distinct sounds, especially when repeated by parents
  • Is able to say “Mama” and “Dada”
  • Can understand short commands including “No”, “Come here” etc
  • Understands the names of familiar objects like “Bottle” or “Blanket”

Milestones are helpful, but keep in mind that every child develops at a unique pace. Loving support, mental stimulation and activities like learning pre-verbal sign language, encourage this area of development. This will allow your child to communicate more effectively before being able to speak. Naming different objects around the house is a fun game that improves vocabulary.

Research has shown that constantly talking to your baby helps to boost language development. You can talk to your child when eating, or take him or her to a day outing in Glover Park and point out trees, plants and animals.
